What kind of mold is in my house? Is it toxic mold?
Mold cannot be identified by sight alone — there are thousands of species. Our role is to collect samples and send them to a certified lab. The lab can determine whether any mold present is a health or structural concern.
How did mold get into my house?
Mold is everywhere. It enters through open doors, windows, vents, HVAC systems, or by attaching to clothing and pets. Once inside, spores grow wherever there’s moisture.
Where does mold grow?
Common locations include areas with water leaks — roofs, pipes, walls, condensation points, and flooded areas. Mold thrives on wet materials like wood, paper, cardboard, ceiling tiles, and water-based adhesives.
How can I tell if there is mold in my home?
Sometimes it’s visible. Otherwise, look for musty odors, consistent dampness, or high-humidity areas like bathrooms and laundry rooms.
How can I stop mold from growing?
- Inspect regularly for water damage or condensation.
- Address moldy or musty smells promptly.
- Look under carpets, behind wallpaper, and in damp areas like basements.
- Check near the furnace for standing water.
- Keep indoor humidity below 65%.
How is mold measured? How do we test for it?
We use four methods to test for mold:
- Air Sampling: Measures airborne spores inside and outside the home for comparison.
- Swab Sampling: Collects surface samples for lab analysis.
- Tape Lifts: Like swab tests, but used on smooth surfaces with adhesive slides.
- Carpet Sampling (ERMI): Dust from older carpets is tested for 36 mold species using DNA analysis.
What types of mold inspections are offered?
- Limited Sampling: Targeted testing of visible problem areas. Starts at $299 for two samples (including lab fees). Additional samples are $95 each.
- ERMI Testing: DNA-based analysis that evaluates the relative moldiness index of your home. Cost: $599.
Are you certified?
Yes. I’m trained in proper mold sampling and certified as an Indoor Air Quality Technician through the Environmental Solutions Association.
What should I expect during the visit?
I’ll assess accessible areas for visible signs of mold or moisture and collect samples as discussed in the initial call.
When will I get results?
Samples are sent overnight to the lab. Results typically take 7–10 days. Expedited analysis is available for an additional fee.
Can mold make me sick?
Mold exposure can cause allergic reactions and other symptoms. If you’re experiencing health issues, consult your doctor.
